Weather proofing our hair

Good Morning!

Hope everyone had a great week and all the kids are back in school! Lol....

Since  I'm in Pa, there are some things I don't have to worry about: Natural diseasters, dry heat, extreme humidity, sand (Lol) BUT I do have to worry about the cold! Ugh...what a way to dampen my wash & go spirits. So now I'm thinking protective style to the rescue. Coming in with about an inch and a half of hair, individuals will be my choice but that choice may not be so easy for everyone.

Here are some ideas for you all that will combating cold weather like I will.

First & Foremost are braids/twists ( and all those in between). I love these things and depending on how well you can maintain them, can really save your sanity. I think now that you've been learning about products and what to do to your hair that you will maintain them a lot better. I would normally grease my scalp; funny I never got them wet. (Nope, I never washed them because I didn't want fuzzy)but let me say that they never had a smell to them and if I went somewhere where smoke or something was I had that spray they sale to cover up smells. Weird now that I think about it. Lol

This time around I plan on doing a deep conditioning/protein treatment the night before..(Literally the whole night) a weekly acv rinse and oil my scalp with castor oil. If I feel the need to shampoo my scalp, I'll add a poo & water mixture to an applicator bottle and focus on my scalp and then rinse out. And I'm sure I will definitely be spraying in my leave in mixture.

If you can't stand braids or synthetic twist, try 2 strand twist. Yes, you will have to redo frequently but it does give you a break for a few days.

Of course there's the natural woman's favorites: braid outs & twist outs. If you have the hair to achieve these looks than rock em. You should be able to get a few days out of them but in the cold you have to watch using products with humectants (i.e glycerin/castor oil) because when there's no water in the air...it will take it from inside of your hair shaft.

Wigs/ weave / half wigs. Get yourself a nice wig, braid your hair under it (if you can...you can also mold it down) and rock it. I got a weave twice this past year and I loved it! My friend is awesome at them and really protected my hair from having glue in it. Those of us with short twa's that can't be put in cornrows can go with this option because your hair can just be gelled down and the hair applied on top. A half wig is good also. You can do all sorts of things to the front of your hair and throw that on.

Fake pony till you own it...gel that hair up or back and throw on a ponytail. I think it's better to do a style that you can redo at night and get up in the morning and not have to do much.

You can also do also coils; you'll have to see how long you can maintain them.

Those with longer hair have alot more options so I guess I did this geared a little to us with a twa. Lol.....those with longer hair can do braids with their own hair, all kinds of twist, pixie plaits and other things.

The purpose is you want to:

spare those ends from trauma

manipulate the hair as least as possible

still moisturize it without subjecting it to moisture robbing humectants (unless you HEAVILY seal which an lead to dryness....That's the funny thing about too much oil/butter)

switch to your heavier conditioners because we are fighting the heat in our house and the cold outside

and SAVE YOUR SANITY!

Happy Protecting day!

Please, if you have tips or styles, PLEASE leave them! Thanks
