Natural Hair Care Abbreviations & Acronyms


Yayyyy, I'm natural but what the heck does twa, acv, apl or baa mean?? No need to fret; here's a list you can refer to anytime you need to know. If I omit something, please add it! <3

2nd day hair-hair that looks fairly decent on the second day

ACV-Apple cider vinegar rinse

APL-arm pit length

BAA-Big a** afro

BAGGING/BAGGY-applying moiturizer/conditioner and placing on bag either on your ponytail or covering your whole head overnight(or during the day)

BANDING-applying bands along sectioned hair to show length

BC-Big Chop

BRAID OUT-braiding your hair, letting it dry and then taking it out

BSL-bra strap length

CARRIER OILS-oils that can be used to seal: shea, jojoba, olive, castor, coconut

CBL-Collarbone length

CONDISH-conditioner

CONES- are silicones found in a lot of products that are rarely water soluble; meaning you will probably need to shampoo you hair to get them out so that they don't block moisture from your hair.

CO-WASH- washing hair with conditioner only

CREAMY CRACK-a relaxer

CW-cowash

DC-deep conditioner/condition

DIY- Do It Yourself

DUSTING-trimming your ends about 1/8 to 1/12 of an inch and it will look like dust on the floor.

ECO-Eco styler gel that many use to make curls pop and have kind of a wet look

EL-ear length

EO-Essential Oil

EVCO-Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

EVGO-Extra Virgin Grapeseed Oil

EVVO-Extra Virgin Olive Oil

FAIRY KNOTS- tiny single strand knots that have to be cut out and usually comes from not properly sealed ends

HIH-Hand in Hair-a "disease" that causes you to always play in tresses

HL-Hip length

LEAVE IN- a leave in conditioner

LOW POO-using shampoo with less harsh cleaners than sulfates

MBL-Middle back length

NO POO-no shampoo; cowash only

PINAPPLEING-pulling hair to the top of the head resembling a pineapple

PJ-product junkie

PRE POO-apply an oil to your head ( moisturizer) the night or sometime before shampooing your hair. Helps to maintain mositure during the shampoo process

SEALING- an important step for all to do:sealing moisture in the hair. After applying a water based moisturizer, you apply an oil or butter to "trap" in the moisture. Pay special attention to your ends.

S&D- search and detroy is a mission to find split ends or fairy knots

SHRINKAGE-when your hair tightens and therefore looks a lot shorter

SL-shoulder length

SLIP-refers to how easily a product can help you detangle; how slippery it is

SULFATES- harsh chemicals found in shampoos that are very drying to our hair

TRANSITIONING-is the process of going from relaxed hair to natural before doing a bc/time since your last relaxer.

TWA-teeny weeny afro- most have after doing a bc

TWIST OUT-twisting your hair, allowing to dry and then taking them out

WASH N GO'S- simply washing your hair, applying a styling product and going

WL-waist length
