A little Shrinkage never hurt.

Good Morning!

So today's post, by request is about shrinkage. Shrinkage is when your hair, in it's natural state, tightens it's curl pattern; thus resulting in shorter LOOKING hair. I emphasized looking because you could easily do a length check to show your length.

Knowing that I will have shrinkage, I of course want to know how to just embrace it or stretch my hair. First let me say that shrinkage gives you versitilaty in your styling. You can achieve looks that a person with a more loose pattern or straight hair can't ( for instance my all time fave: THE PUFF). You can also go from a very short look one day and then a longer one the next. *Yall know how we like to change things up! Lol*

But if you want ways to stretch your hair, here are a few tips:

1. Twist/Braid outs- twisting or braiding the hair when it's wet and then seperating when dry.

2. Banding- this involves placing bands along wet sectioned off  length of your hair, therefore stretching it out and removing them when dry. Never rubberbands!

3. Natural oils- it's said avocado oil is great at stretching hair as is shea butter when you twist or braid with it.

4. Heat is also an option

5. Bantu knot outs- put in bantu knots and take out when dry..Your hair will have a nice curl to it.

6. Curlformers- I saw a vid on these and the curls looked just like a wet set on relaxed hair.

7. Henna

Now I read about some hair treatments involving milk, sour cream or yogurt. They believe that the lactic acid stretches the hair. This is trial & error and it may/may not work for you. Apply yogurt to hair or spritz in milk, leave for an hour and rinse out. OR add the yogurt to your conditioner and use it to cowash...curls will gradually loosen...HOWEVER THESE ARE JUST TEMPORARY EFFECTS UNTIL YOU WASH.

Then there's the coconut lime "relaxer" *here's an article* http://blackhairinformation.com/hair-treatments-and-recipes/the-coconut-and-lime-treatment-for-natural-black-hair/

So think of your hair as a very fragile wig. Lol.....embrace it and rock styles that others can't. *clearing my throat....puff*

Happy shrinking day!

  1. Recently, I've decided to love and embrace my shrinkage as I have done with my entire journey to natural. Shrinkage will often give me the cutest style !

Another reson why I really dont mind shrinkage is because...as of now my goal is not so much to retain lots and lots of length...my hair is cut into the style I want and like which the only 'length" (per say ) is on the top and front.sides and back shorter. My goal is to is to keep healthy what I have....so, shrinkage is now my friend...I dont mind it at all !

    Take care.

  2. Thanks for that. I have a long time to worry about shrinkage.. Lol...I'll post a two month pic on the 22nd. I actually like now that my curls just tighten; keeps me from having to add gel to it.

  3. Thank you for posting this! I have been struggling with all kinds of concoctions and tonics to get use to my natural hair. I was 10 years old when my momma put a relaxer in my hair and it wasn't until last year at the ripe age of 37 when I decided to go all natural. I cut the relaxed ends off and screamed in pure joy! It's been a year and I still don't know what to do,(I feel like a child just getting use to doing my own hair!) I have resorted to a leave-in, a headband and the wet look almost everyday. It is now on the verge of that wild woman look which I also love...at times :) Thank you for all the options and explanation on shrinkage. I do feel my hair needed a complete rest after years of stress. Now that it has had that time, I'm ready to really play with it!
    Peace,
    Gina

  5. I don't mind shrinkage at all. My goal has never been to see how long my hair can hang. I like it big, so I am shooting for bigger. Shrinkage is my friend, lol.
